Eternal Glory to Our Heroic Martyrs!

Year after year on the 20th of June the Eritrean people solemnly commemorate Memorial Day for our heroic martyrs who gave their invaluable lives to bring about the independence of Eritrea, to free the Eritrean people, and to preserve national sovereignty. They made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of freedom, justice and prosperity for the Eritrean people.

The modern history of Eritrea is a history of a heroic struggle replete with unparalleled perseverance and sacrifices. The objective of the heroic struggle waged, and the huge sacrifices made was to achieve national independence and establish democratic governance able to bring about freedom, justice and prosperity for the Eritrean people.

Tens of thousands of successive generations of Eritrean men and women invested their youth, gave their lives, and endured disability to make these noble objectives a reality. They achieved the independence of Eritrea and defended its sovereignty and territorial integrity by foiling renewed expansionist aggression through their sacrifices. They attained the independence of Eritrea and laid the foundation for the sovereign State of Eritrea through their sacrifices and recorded the modern history of Eritrea through their blood.

It is thus fitting that, on the 20th of June, Memorial Day, all patriotic Eritreans solemnly commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the people and the country; commend the heroic disabled war veterans; and demand justice for the luminaries of the armed struggle, journalists and ordinary citizens who, jailed without due process and detained without charge or trial, have virtually been buried alive.

Vindicating the sacrifices of our martyrs and enabling our people to achieve the objectives of their struggle requires an earnest endeavour to empower and strengthen the agency of our people to demand freedom, human security, dignity, justice and prosperity. It necessitates an earnest endeavour to establish an accountable and transparent constitutional government that respects the rule of law; administers justice; and uses our country’s natural, human and material resources in the service of national development and the improvement of the standard of living of our people.

Long live an independent sovereign State of Eritrea!

Eternal glory to our martyrs!

God bless Eritrea and the Eritrean people!
